The Royal site of La Granja is situated in the northern slope of the "Sierra del Guadarrama", 90 km. away from Madrid and 30 from La Barranca Hotel. Its name comes from an ancient farm that the Jerome Monks had in the place were it is currently situated.

La Granja`s Palace

Felipe V retired to this place in 1724, ad during the next 20 years improved the gardens and the Palace, which was used as summer residence by all of its successors until Alfonso XIII.

The gardens are a very good example of what is preserved regarding XVIII century gardens, done by the French arquitect Rene Carlier.

La Granja gardens

White marble statues and XVIII century vases decorate the flowerbeds and avenues of the gardens, which are completed by magnificent sculptures inside the fountains, made of painted lead imitating bronze.
